While this is acceptable dealing with fear or sadness has proven to be a challenging situation, calling for professional intervention. When fear or sadness becomes hard to deal with, people often use such diagnostic words as anxiety and depression. Apparently, anxiety and depression are the leading cause of global mental health problem. For this reason, diagnosis and treatment of mental health has attracted the attention of various stakeholders including psychiatrists, medical practitioners, governments, not to mention to common citizens. Taking scans from 20 patients and 20 controls, Canadian psychiatrists examined the effects of depression on brain inflammation. Results indicated that depressed pat ients had more inflammation of the brain compared to the control group. For instance, patients suffering from depression had 26% higher levels of protein in the prefrontal cortex of the brain, 32% higher in the anterior cingulate cortex, and 33% higher in the insular area. These results shed rights to new ways of treating mental illness. Previously, mental illness was associated with psychological experiences or social condition as opposed to biological factors suggested by Dr. Meyer. However, the researchers were not able to determine whether inflammation was directly related to depression or its results. Discussion Scientists and psychiatrists have been giving names in the past to mental health conditions in order to distinguish one group of symptom from another.
